Things to know/ask when starting the school year

 

  • Access to the building:
    • Who to contact?
    • Key? Card swipe? Buzz system?

 

  • Office Space
    • Is there a dedicated therapy space? If not, what other rooms are available?
    • Is there a dedicated mailbox?

 

  • Who are the primary referents?
    • This may be guidance, the school social worker, teachers, and/or the principal/assistant principal but generally one person would take the lead.

 

  • Who does the scheduling?
    • There may be someone identified, or you may be responsible for this yourself.

 

  • Who retrieves the client at the appointment time?

 

  • Is there block scheduling?
    • If so, request a copy of the schedule, it's helpful to be strategic about varying the days.

 

  • Are there periods that are off-limits?
    • Sometimes “special” classes are.
    • Teachers often appreciate you varying the class or subject the student misses.

 

  • Access to supplies, fax machines, etc.?
    • Sometimes the school will allow the use of office supplies however many things can be supplied through Amy.

 

  • Access to school calendar? 
    • Teacher workshops
    • How to find out about snow days?
